Gingivitis is a gum disease which is caused due to the deposition of plaque, which is a naturally occurring substance and contains bad bacteria, around the teeth and produces inflammation in the gums. Plaque produces harmful toxins which causes inflammation, makes them red and bleeding. This plaque can cause things worse beyond gingivitis like it can weaken the tooth enamel which promotes tooth decay. So proper care of gums is a must on a daily basis. If the gingivitis is left untreated then it can cause severe periodontitis. Let us discuss the causes of Gingivitis.

  1. Smoking or tobacco use:

It is one of the main causes for the most of the gum diseases including gingivitis and also lowers the chances of successful treatment. It has been proved in research that smokers are more likely to get gum diseases than non smokers. Smoking or use of tobacco is harmful for oral health.

  1. No complete removal of plaque:

Sometimes it happens that through brushing you are able to remove the plaque from the teeth and gum line, but in the middle of the teeth it is not possible to clean completely with the brush, so it is advisable that you floss regularly.

  1. Hormonal changes:

There are different phases like puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, etc when hormonal changes occur in the body and increase the sensitivity and inflammation in the gums. You need to take care of the gums during these physiological changes as this is one of the main causes of Gingivitis

  1. Poor nutrition:

If you do not give importance to a healthy diet then this can cause gum diseases as due to the lack of proper nutrients, the capability of the body to fight against infection decreases which leads to gum diseases also. So take a healthy diet including all the essential nutrients.

  1. Chronic diseases:

In some cases, if a person is suffering from chronic diseases like HIV, diabetes, cancer, etc then it is difficult for the body to fight against infections. In this case, tell your dentist about the medical conditions so that he or she can help you.

So these are the causes of gingivitis. It is treatable and curable. Whenever you feel any symptoms like bleeding gums, loose teeth, bad breath, gum inflammation, etc then immediately consult your doctor. They can help you in removing the plaque and also suggest to you how to take care of your oral cavity, what to use and what to eat for a healthy oral cavity.
